Here is a partial list of the health benefits that come from as little as 2.5 hours of moderate physical activity a week: help prevent or manage heart disease, high blood pressure, stroke, metabolic syndrome, type 2 diabetes, depression, arthritis, and falls. It helps to boost good cholesterol (HDL) and decrease unhealthy triglycerides.

It also helps to build strong healthy bones, which slows the bone loss associated with getting older. According to the Harvard School of Public Health, there is a lower risk of developing certain cancers – colon and lung cancer in both genders as well as breast and endometrial cancer in women. There is even evidence to suggest that being physically fit helps to prevent cognitive decline.

Benefit #3. Improve Your Mood. Something as simple as a 30 minute brisk walk can give you an emotional lift or help you blow off some steam. There are brain chemicals stimulated by physical activity that may leave you feeling happier, more relaxed, more energized, less anxious and depressed, and better able to manage stress. And you may feel emotionally better (e.g., confidence and self-esteem), when you see your appearance improved.

Benefit #4. Boost Your Energy. A regular exercise routine can help to improve your muscle strength and endurance. Physical activity delivers oxygen and nutrients to your tissues and help your cardiovascular system work more efficiently. Especially when your heart and lungs work more efficiently, you have more energy to go about your daily activities.

Benefit #5. Promote Better Sleep. According to mayoclinic.org, being physically fit can help you fall asleep faster and experience deeper sleep. However, make sure that you don’t exercise too close to bedtime. This may lead to having too much energy to fall asleep.

Benefit #6. Enhance Your Sex Life. Regular exercising can help you feel energized and look better, which may have a positive effect on your sex life. It has been associated with enhanced arousal for women and prevention of erectile dysfunction with men.

Benefit #7. Enhance Your Social Life. Physical activity can be a fun way to spend your time. It gives you a chance to enjoy the outdoors, unwind, or simply engage in activities that make you happy. There are too many people who work so hard all of their lives just to get older and so broke down that they cannot enjoy those things that they have worked so hard to have. Think about having grandchildren but too sickly or frail to play with them. Think about having money to go around the world but to sickly or frail to travel.

The next time, you want to eat the entire pizza, remember that pizza today doesn’t taste as good as being able to enjoy good health in your 70’s and 80’s.
